Found Sunday August 23, 2015 on a rural Carter County road, Festus just showed up one morning on the property with several dogs known to be aggressive to new dogs. The owner of the property was amazed when he contacted us, stating “I really don’t know how he was able to approach my dogs without being harmed.”
Festus was afraid of nothing; he was small but mighty.
Festus had many health issues and most were never diagnosed. From chronic skin issues that came and went to disc issues with his back. He battled pancreatitis at one point and was a strong fighter until the very end. Festus loved toys and would guard the dog food bowl, a bone, a toy, a leaf or anything else he could claim as his property. He loved to meet new people and be spoiled, serving as a great spokesdog on numerous occasions at Back Roads Animal Rescue fundraising and educational events.
Sadly, Festus passed away on October 22, 2018 due to congestive heart failure.

EMMA
Emma was pulled from a rural Kentucky shelter on February 25, 2019. She was obviously blind or mostly blind and although being uncomfortably matted, placed into a damp and loud shelter with all the strange smells, she was the sweetest little dog from the very beginning.
We were told that Emma was abandoned in a home, left alone to fend for herself! Many blind dogs who are in unfamiliar territory will become snippy out of fear, especially in the stress of a kennel environment. Not miss Emma. She remained calm, sweet and appreciative. We met her on Friday, February 22, 2019 but the shelter would not let us take her until Monday and we had to leave her for the weekend. We were back first thing Monday and took her straight to the vet! Once Emma was healthy and ready she was transferred to Paws Across Pittsburgh, a partner rescue, where she was adopted on 5/13/2019 and is now adored by her family. Her eyes were evaluated by a specialist but it was determined that nothing could be done to improve her eyesight, caused by severe cataracts, but most people don’t even know she is blind. We receive many updates on sweet Emma and her sister-by-love, Lenore. They look like they are true biological sisters! |
