He was adopted July 22, 2017 where he lived an amazing life for 18 months.
Frankie’s story is one of the saddest but with the best possible outcome. To quote the words of his adopters, Frankie “…had a difficult life, that had taken its toll on his body, but not his spirit. The dogs that have suffered the most somehow find a way to trust humans again.” Frankie was wise and if he could have talked we are certain none of us could have emotionally or mentally handled his story, yet he continued to seek the company of humans.
Frankie was injured, presumably struck by a car, as he could not walk on his hind feet. He found his way to a man’s yard, in the deep cold of January, when the ground was hard and cold. Because the man did not want to take care of another dog, he allowed Frankie to lay in his yard and did nothing to make him comfortable, protect him from the elements, or even give him food or water. We are not sure how long Frankie had to lay there suffering but a family member guessed it had been a couple days when she showed up and discovered Frankie and rushed him to Back Roads Animal Rescue. Frankie was so emaciated, weak and frail, estimated around 12 or more years old, and could barely hold up the weight of his own head.
But Frankie was strong and determined. He had to be carried in and out to potty for the first couple days but as soon as he could muster the strength he would no longer be carried. We began to refer to him as “uncle Frankie” as he interacted with the other dogs, asserting his wisdom at the perfect time for young dogs to learn. Frankie was eventually adopted by a couple from out of state (who have since adopted two other dogs from Back Roads) and lived the absolute best life we are sure he ever knew. He was loved and spoiled just as he deserved and eventually passed away after his body finally couldn’t take any more after battling vestibular disease.
